If you want to create a playground in the garden, think carefully about what can be done in terms of space. The age of the child must also be taken into account.Play tent; Image source: vertbaudet.de
For garden owners with children, their own garden is the perfect place to let the children play freely, easily and safely. The garden invites you to discover and hide. It is itself a colorful adventure playground, but can be transformed into a real children's paradise with little effort.
Romping and playing in the fresh air is not only fun, it is also healthy. A perfectly laid out garden with many beds is hardly interesting for children, a child-friendly garden needs corners as well as free space. It is therefore always a good idea to divide the garden into different areas and declare one of them to be a “kindergarten”, where it does not matter if the ball ends up in the bed or the children realize themselves with a shovel and bucket.
Which playground ideas are feasible in the garden?
- free areas for catching or playing ball
- Sports equipment such as trampoline or gates
- a play tent, tree or play house
- Play equipment such as a swing or sandpit.
What you ultimately implement depends on the age and interests of the children, as well as your own budget. However, many ideas can also be implemented inexpensively.
1. Create a retreat in the garden
Who hasn't dreamed of having their own tree house as a child, in which one can retire in front of curious parents? Realize this dream for your children. You have two options for this. Either you build a tree house yourself according to the instructions, or you get a kit in the hardware store. Both require manual skills and a sufficiently large tree. In addition, a tree house is quite labor and cost intensive, and you also have to take certain safety precautions into account.
➩ The tree house alternative:
The playhouse variant, a kind of tent house, that you don't build in a tree, but on the ground, is much simpler. This form is particularly recommended for smaller children. There are also kits for this. By mounting on the floor, the house can be expanded at any time with a terrace or other play equipment, such as a slide or a climbing frame. A play tent, as you can find it at vertbaudet, is particularly inexpensive. Even if it is not as stable as a wooden house, a play tent fulfills its function as a retreat and offers space for 2 to 4 children, depending on the age. The practical thing is, you simply take the playhouse to the children's room in winter. The small house is suitable for children from 2 years.
2. No garden playground without play equipment
Play equipment should not be missing in a playground in the garden. They come in different price ranges, so there is something for every budget. When purchasing, you should take into account the age of the children.
For toddlers and kindergarten children, the sandpit is the classic for a good reason. Playing in the sand is a lot of fun for the children and at the same time demands creativity and fine motor skills. When building sandcastles, an adult does not always have to sit directly under supervision. In addition to fixed models made of wood, there are inexpensive and mobile plastic sandboxes. It is only important that you can cover the box to protect the sand from contamination, especially cat droppings.

For older children it can be a little more. The "big ones" want to move and let off steam. Multi-play devices such as play towers with a slide and a swing are ideal for this.
If you don't have the space, you can of course also set up individual play equipment.
- climbing frame
- climbing wall
- Rope ladder or rope
3. Leave enough free space to work out
However, please do not block the entire garden with play equipment. Note that your children also need an open space where they can just romp around. Older children in particular like to play ball sports, such as football or badminton, for which space is required. If you have a lot of space in the garden, you can also set up a trampoline. It is the current trend sports equipment for the garden. It is important that the trampoline has been tested for safety by a recognized test center (e.g. TÜV or GS tested) and that it is not loaded with more people than specified by the manufacturer. There should also be a net around it to prevent falls.
Before you create a playground in the garden, think about the following:
- How old is my child / children
- How many square meters do I have?
- What devices can I set up?
- What can I build myself?
- What is my budget?
Design the playground in the garden exactly according to your options. What is important is not a variety of play equipment, but a play paradise optimally designed for your child / children.
